FRISCO, Texas (Sunday, April 10, 2022) – In its second match of the 2022 Generation Adidas Cup, The Real Salt Lake Academy U15s defeated FC Cincinnati Academy 1-0 to stay on top of its group, heading into the final match of the group stage.
On another windy day in Frisco, Texas, the RSL Academy U15s opened the match in dominant fashion, controlling much of the possession and firing the majority of the shots. The U15s were able to break through in the 23rd minute with forward Kevin Hernandez’s first goal of the tournament, assisted by fellow forward Zavier Gozo.
Out of the halftime break, the U15s continued its strong defensive effort, limiting shots and possession. RSL looked to double its score midway through the second half when defender Luis Rivera set up for a free kick. Rivera’s shot appeared to have tucked into the goal but was determined to have not crossed the line by the referee. The match finished 1-0 in favor of the U15s for its second win and goalkeeper Ty Rinker’s first clean sheet of the tournament.
Rivera on the match: “I think we handled it pretty well, playing against the wind. It was hard, but we still got the result. Unfortunately, my free kick didn’t go in, but we still got the win.”
RSL U15 Head Coach Andrew May on tomorrow’s match against Club Tijuana: “It is important because it is international competition, and that is something that [Generation Adidas] Cup is all about. It will be a good contest and good experience for all the players, so that is what I am looking forward to.”
