The Real Salt Lake Academy returned to action this past Saturday against San Jose Earthquakes, the two teams first action since the MLS NEXT Fest in early December of 2021, during which both the U15 and U17 squads went undefeated to close out the calendar year.Â
Unlike the Club’s first team, Real Salt Lake, and MLS NEXT Pro side, Real Monarchs, the RSL Academy competes in a standard school calendar year, with game stretching from August until the middle of May.Â
The two teams finished out the first half of their seasons ranked in the top four of the MLS NEXT West Division for Inter League play.Â
The U17s dropped a disappointing result on the road to San Jose, falling 2-1 after a late goal from the Earthquakes. Midfielder Izzy Amparo scored the loan goal for the Claret and Cobalt, assisted by Real Monarchs forward Terron Williams. The game marked the first for Head Coach Jordan Allen after taking charge in early January.
The U15s earned a 1-1 draw against the Earthquakes thanks to a goal from midseason transfer Kevin Hernandez, assisted by Axel Uriostegui.Â
The two teams will return to the Bay Area this weekend for a double header against Sacramento Republic on Saturday, February 26 and Ballistic United on Sunday, February 27. U15 Head Coach Andrew May will be without Armani Haro (MEX), Dominic Berrios (USA), Carlos Castrejon (MEX), Zavier Gozo (USA) and Luis Rivera (USA) who are all with their respective youth national teams.
