Real Salt Lake’s U-17s dropped its quarterfinal round match with Valencia, allowing two second-half goals in rapid succession to fall 2-0 to the Spanish club.
In a scoreless first half, RSL held off an efficient Valencia attack, then had a breakaway chance in the 24th minute when Bode Davis got free up the middle. With just the goalkeeper to beat, Davis sent a chip toward the far post, but gusting winds carried it wide. Minutes later, Bobby Pierre thwarted a Valencia breakaway, making a tackle at the edge of the 18 to clear the danger and the teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
However, early in the second half Valencia scored two goals within two minutes of each other to take command of the game. Second-half substitute Pablo Caparelli had two chances to get RSL on the board, but couldn’t convert. Late in the half, Valencia earned a PK, but the effort missed high – the third unsuccessful penalty attempt against goalkeeper Brennan Klein in the tournament.
Real Salt Lake will play its next match on Thursday at 9:45 a.m. MT.
