On the heels of two tough losses, each of which seeing the Claret-and -Cobalt facing bizarre circumstances, Real Salt Lake returned to its vaunted America First Field home Saturday with a renewed sense of determination and grit, eager to turn things around and snap the rare slide.

Head Coach Pablo Mastroeniā€™s team delivered a much-needed victory in front of its home crowd, demonstrating resolute grit and resilience, showcasing attacking flair and skill. The three points captured reflects not only a boost in morale for the players and coaching staff, but also reignites hope amongst the fans, proving RSL's ability to rise to the occasion.

While the assured and composed win was truly a full team effort, one where the beautifully-executed midfield force led by Captain Emeka Eneli and engine Braian Ojeda that suffocated the Galaxy, one player rose above the rest to score two goals in the first half ensuring victory. Utah's pride and joy, burgeoning USMNT starlet Diego Luna lived up to his nickname of ā€œMoon Man,ā€ shining bright in front of his home crowd and visiting family.

Now, let's dive into the details of Luna's stellar week, where his remarkable performances have made him a standout performer, this weekend will certainly be one to remember.

Moon Man Shines Bright: Incredible Week Culminates with a Stellar Two-Goal Performance

Luna has been on fire this year, since the USA January camp inclusion. After returning from his most recent callup to the USMNT in late March, where he put on an impactful performance in the Concacaf Nations League, securing an assist, Luna returned home to accept the award for 2024 Male Professional Athlete of the Year at the Governor's State of Sport Awards on Friday April 4, cementing his place as one of the brightest stars in soccer.

The State of Sport Awards were created in 2012 by the Utah Sports Commision and the Utah Governorā€™s office to celebrate the Beehive Stateā€™s rich and emerging sports industry, while recognizing excellence at all levels. It is an honor for any athlete to be selected and a well-deserved shout out for Luna and his abilities on the pitch. The award was made even sweeter, as his family from all over the American West made the trip to be here for both the awards ceremony and the game this weekend, making the achievement even more memorable.

Luna is no stranger to excellence, coming off of the heels of an amazing season in 2024, where he became the second player in league history to record at least 20 goal contributions in a single season before turning 21. It was performances like this that landed him the honor of being named Major League Soccerā€™s 2024 Young Player of the Year. Building on the success of the previous campaign, Luna has pushed to new heights, his performance on the field has only improved, with every game showcasing the growth and commitment to becoming an even more dominant force for Club and Country.

With his family in the stands - as well as U.S. Menā€™s National Team assistant coach Miguel Dā€™Agostino, who will be in Nashville this upcoming weekend - Luna put on a show from the first whistle. Along with his attacking counterparts, Luna was able to pressure the Galaxy rearguard early, leading the charge on crucial goal-scoring chances.

In the 21st minute that relentless pressure paid off. Greek defender and another Utah fan favorite, DF Alex Katranis showcased his skill and put a perfectly-placed ball towards the middle of the box, finding Luna, who took two touches before slamming the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. The goal was a masterclass of teamwork and passing highlighting the stellar abilities of both Katranis and Luna.

After the first goal, it was game over as Luna was on fire, scoring his second goal just five minutes later. In similar fashion, RSL striker Ari Piol crossed the ball from the left side of the box, with an LA defender interrupting the pass; however, Luna was able to regain possession and take a one-timed shot that reached the back of the net. With two goals in just six minutes of play it is no wonder Luna has earned the new nickname of ā€œDieGOALā€.

One thing is for certain, at just 21 years old, Diego Luna has an incredible way of finding the best positions to score and create, reading the game expertly and being in the right place at the right time to capitalize on every opportunity. His willingness to get into the box and make those quick sprints have been massive points of emphasis for Mastroeniā€™s attack, the perfect example for the importance of positioning, work rate and defensive pressure in the attacking third.

Having the support of family and friends is huge, especially for professional athletes whose seasons are long and strenuous. For Luna to have his family here to celebrate and support him this weekend surely gave him an added boost, their presence made his brace even more exciting.

Diego Lunaā€™s accolades so early in his MLS career are nothing short of remarkable, showcasing a level of talent and maturity beyond his years. From his stellar performances on the field to earning prestigious awards, he has quickly become one of the most exciting emerging talents in soccer. The trajectory of his career has not only made him a standout player but has also filled his family and RSL fans with immense pride. As he continues to evolve and build on his success, thereā€™s no doubt that the future in the game is incredibly bright for Luna and those lucky enough to witness his journey are in for something truly special.
