Real Salt Lake 2 vs. Columbus Crew SC 2
June 27, 2015; Rio Tinto Stadium
Records: Real Salt Lake (5-6-7, 22 points). Columbus Crew SC (5-6-6, 21 points)
Man of the Match: Luke Mulholland didn’t show up on the scoresheet on Saturday, but his workrate in the midfield was second to none. It’s been a busy week, with Mulholland logging 250 minutes in three matches over seven days, but he put that behind him and was a big difference-maker on both sides of the ball for RSL.
Telling Stat: In the six matches that Javier Morales has missed this season, this was the second time that RSL managed two goals. Morales is such a vital piece to RSL’s attack, scoring without him in the lineup is a big boost to a club that is trying to find ways to score goals.
What You Missed: The Annexation of Puerto Rico. While not a name actually used by the team for the pattern used on the set-piece goal in the first half, it made for a good Twitter story for the night.
So What: RSL remains unbeaten in the last six matches and now will lose Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando to the U.S. National Team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Add them to the already departed Alvaro Saborio (Costa Rica) and Elias Vasquez (Guatemala) along with the soon-to-be leaving Demar Phillips (Jamaica) and Head Coach Jeff Cassar will need to look to his depth throughout the next month. With still a good stretch of home matches on the calendar, it remains a good opportunity for RSL to earn points at Rio Tinto Stadium.
