Real Monarchs Take Two Points in Portland

PORTLAND, Oregon (Sunday, July 14 2024) - Real Monarchs (4-10-2, 16pts, 12th in West) best Portland Timbers 2 (4-6-7, 21pts, 9th in West) in an extra time shootout (4:2) for the second time this season after a 1-1 regulation finish.

Through the first 20 minutes of play, Monarchs were put under intense pressure from Portland. The backline maintained possession despite Portland’s press, waiting for the opportunities to advance the ball to present themselves.

An opportunity came in the 20th minute for the Monarchs off of their second free kick in the span of a minute. Both fouls were given close to the touchline and inside the Monarchs’ final third. While the offensive line couldn’t get a touch on it the first time around, the second free kick ended differently. Tommy Silva lofted the ball into the box where a Timbers 2 defender got a head on it, sending it back out to the top of the box. Damien Barker John found the ball there, touched it down once, and then volleyed it into the netting. Barker John punched the ball low and hard into the far corner of the goal through heavy traffic.

The Monarchs lead only lasted until the 43rd minute when Portland found their equalizer. The goal came off of a penalty shot taken by Joshua Penn. Will Mackay guessed the right direction getting a glove on the ball but could not stop the shot completely.

The second half brought plenty of chances for the Monarchs. One of the first dangerous situations came from Silva on the touchline. Silva settled down the ball after a long pass from his midfield. He drove the ball into the box, attracting the Portland defenders and allowing Barker John space on the far side of the box. Silva got close enough to draw the Portland goalie off the line and chipped it over his head to find Barker John unmarked. This chip was overhit and soared over the goalie’s head as well as Barker John’s.

Another great chance came off the foot of Silva, this time in the 90th minute in a similar situation. Silva received the ball on the sideline and took a few touches in towards the goal. Just outside of the box he lifted the ball to Ilijah Paul who waited for it at the 6-yard line. Paul got a head on the ball and angled it perfectly into the back of the net. This goal was quickly taken off the board as the flag went up indicating that Paul was offside. The game ended in a 1:1 tie and the match headed to a shootout for the second time between the two clubs this season .

The shootout started out strong as Mackay blocked back-to-back shots. Up 2-0, the Monarchs rode out the lead to a 4-2 victory claiming the second point up for grabs.

The Monarchs head to the Town FC for their next match on July 21st before returning home to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at Zions Bank Stadium on July 28th.
