TACOMA, Washington (Wednesday, June 23, 2021) – Real Monarchs (1-5-3, 6 points) earned a point on the road with a 1-1 result against Tacoma Defiance at Cheney Stadium.
Forward Malik Johnson scored his first goal for the Real Monarchs to aid in the team’s 1-1 draw.
The Monarchs began the match on the front foot, as evidenced by the breakthrough goal in the 8th minute. Johnson fired the ball past the keeper from outside the box to give the Monarchs the lead. As the match settled, the Monarchs' defense held strong and took the lead into the halftime break.
Goalkeeper Andrew Putna made several saves throughout the second half to keep the Monarchs in front, but the Defiance kept the pressure on and eventually found the equalizer in the first minute of added time. Despite late chances for both sides, the match ended 1-1.

SLC: Malik Johnson, 8th minute: After stealing possession in the Monarchs’ half of the pitch, forward Malik Johnson turned upfield and blasted a right-footed shot from deep outside the box. The strongly-hit ball lasered past the keeper and into the top-center of the net.
TAC: Samuel Adeniran (Taylor Mueller), 90+1’: Following a pass from defender Taylor Mueller, forward Samuel Adeniran curled the left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Real Monarchs midfielder Julio Benitez made his professional debut in Head Coach Jamison Olave’s starting lineup in tonight’s match, making the 15-year-old the youngest debutant in club history and the fifth-youngest in the history of the USL Championship.
Monarchs defender Haroun Conteh made his professional debut as a starter in the center of the backline in tonight’s match against Tacoma.
