Signature Moment: In the club’s inaugural season in 2014, Sacramento topped the Harrisburg City Islanders 2-0 to win the USL Championship. Behind USL Coach of the Year Preki, the Republic went 17-7-4 in the regular season before a playoff run that saw wins over the Wilmington Hammerheads and LA Galaxy II before winning the title against Harrisburg.
Head Coach:
Paul Buckle – The former manager at English clubs Torquay United, Bristol Rovers, Luton Town and Cheltenham Town, Buckle took over at Sacramento in 2015 after Preki left abruptly at midseason. In his first full season, he coached the Republic to the best record in the West at 14-6-10, but lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Top Players:
FW Sammy Ochoa – The former U.S. Youth International and Seattle Sounders forward leads the Republic with four goals and also has three assists. At 30 years old, he provides a veteran presence in the attack and U.S. Open Cup experience, scoring three goals in four matches in 2012 to help Seattle reach the final.
MF Danny Barrera – Another former U.S. Youth International, Barrera had a notable Open Cup run with Cal FC in 2012, ousting MLS’s Portland Timbers with the amateur club. Sacramento’s captain was a USL All-League selection in 2016. He has one goal and three assists this season.
MF Jeremy Hall – A former first-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft, Hall logged 127 appearances with the New York Red Bulls, Portland Timbers, FC Dallas, Toronto FC and New England Revolution from 2009-2015. With four caps with the Puerto Rico National Team, he also has international experience under his belt.
