We are now less than 24 hours away from the 2016 MLS SuperDraft in Baltimore where Real Salt Lake holds the fifth overall pick. To get a perspective on just who might be selected when RSL is on the clock, we checked in with some mock drafts from around the web. Here’s what they had to say.
Watch the draft live on RSL.com starting at 11 am MT.
Omar Holness, M, North Carolina (GA)
“Stop me if you've heard this one before: There are some questions about Holness's best position. He played a ton of attacking midfield in college (putting up ho-hum numbers) and was used often on the wing at the Combine. He's the type of athlete who can provide that flexibility. But he's also a pretty damn good soccer player, and to me he looks most at home as a box-to-box No. 8 who can chew up ground. A guy like that would look good between Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales.”
Richie Laryea, M, Akron (GA)
“Having just lost midfielder Luis Gil to a free transfer, we can see Jeff Cassar grabbing the talented Laryea, who can fit in a number of positions. He’s coming off an outstanding season at Akron that showed his creativity and ability to break down defenses.”
Richie Laryea, M Akron (GA)
“With a couple of aging midfielders in Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales, picking Laryea here would add a promising and talented young midfielder to the fold in Salt Lake City. Laryea has to carve out a position for himself at the next level in order to blossom, and learning from that veteran pair will only help his chances of success.”
Julian Beuscher, M, Syracuse (GA)
“After losing Luis Gil and Luis Silva, RSL needs someone that can pass the ball and involve the wings, Buescher is the obvious choice even if he may take time to adjust to a 4-3-3, but, in the meantime, he can serve as an impact player off the bench.”
