SANDY, Utah (Thursday, February 13, 2020) – Real Salt Lake has re-signed midfielder Luke Mulholland ahead of the 2020 season, bringing the veteran back for his seventh season with the club.
“Luke is an established member of our club and community and we are thrilled to have him back in an RSL jersey for the 2020 season," RSL General Manager Elliot Fall said. "He is a player who has dealt with significant adversity over the last couple years and has bounced back in a fantastic way. Without his contributions, the Real Monarchs would not have had the postseason success they did last year – that alone shows his level of professionalism and character. He is a role model for our young players both on the field and in the locker room”
Originally acquired by RSL prior to the 2014 season after a successful stint with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the former NASL, Mulholland has spent his entire Major League Soccer career with RSL. Since 2014, Mulholland has appeared in 123 matches, 97 of which were starts. Mulholland has notched 16 goals and 16 assists through 8,403 regular season minutes during his time with RSL. The Preston, England, native has also seen time in the MLS Cup Playoffs in three of his six seasons at RSL, totaling 346 minutes in five postseason appearances. In 2019, he made eight regular season appearances for Real Monarchs, tallying one goal and one assist. He then was a key component of the USL Championship squad on its playoff run with one assist in four matches, ultimately winning the 2019 USL Championship title.
Real Salt Lake finished the 2019 season third in the Western Conference at 16-13-5 (53 points) and advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals for the second consecutive season. RSL will open the 2020 season on the road against Orlando City SC on February 29 before returning to Rio Tinto Stadium for the home opener against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, March 7, at 12 p.m. MT.
