U.S. National Team starts Gold Cup with 2-1 win over Honduras

Kyle Beckerman vs Honduras 0707

The U.S. National Team had a good, though shaky, start to the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Tuesday in Frisco, Texas, outlasting Honduras 2-1 to open the tournament.  Although the team wasn’t as sharp as he hoped, Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann is optimistic about the team’s play moving forward.

“It’s going to be a journey.  We know we’re going to improve from match to match.  It was clear that it’s not going to be perfect in the beginning,” Klinsmann told media after the match.  “Hopefully from game to game we get more in a flow and more in a rhythm and we’re going to start to fine-tune elements.  It was tricky getting everybody on the same page, so it takes maybe a couple of days, but we will improve with everything.”

Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman played the full 90 minutes in the middle of the park along with Michael Bradley, who earned his 100th cap on Tuesday night.  They were flanked by DeAndre Yedlin on the right and Gyasi Zardes on the left, who were playing in uncustomary positions.

Clint Dempsey scored in the 25th minute, then added another in the 64th minute before Honduras pulled one back through Carlos Discua in the 69th minute, but the U.S. held on for the 2-1 win.  Next up in the Gold Cup is a matchup with Haiti on Friday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.
