Colorado Springs, Colorado (Sunday, June 26, 2016) – Real Monarchs defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Switchbacks Stadium on Sunday afternoon. MF Elder Torres scored the lone goal for the Monarchs, giving them the 1-0 victory as GK Lalo Fernandez also picked up a clean sheet for his fourth shutout of the season.
The match got underway quickly with both teams battling to gain tempo for their side. With several deadly shots triggered from Colorado, the Monarchs reacted swiftly and gained possession for much of the match.
In just the 24th minute of play, Torres scored the lone goal for the Monarchs. DF Emilio Orozco took a long freekick from the Monarchs’ defensive line that popped right in front of Torres. With a couple Colorado defenders on him, Torres fought to get a foot on the ball, where it rolled into the back of the net. Torres’ goal stood to be the only goal of the game but not without competition.
Colorado Springs came out strong in the second half of play. The Switchbacks had numerous shots on goal that tested Fernandez. Minutes into the second half, Fernandez made the save of the game and kept the Monarchs victory alive. A shot was fired just inside the 18 and right on target. Blinded by his own teammates defending, Fernandez was forced to make a quick deflection to save the goal.
In the 69th minute of play, Colorado Springs went down to 10 men after Switchback’s DF Chris Ibeagha received a red card after committing a hard foul on Monarch’s MF Ricardo Velazco. As tempers boiled, the remaining minutes of the match were chaos. In just the final minutes of play, a couple cards were given out, including a red to Real Monarchs DF Tyler Arnone. Following the card, a penalty kick was awarded to Colorado Springs for a possible equalizer, but Fernandez came up with the save to preserve the shutout victory.
The Real Monarchs will face Colorado Springs again this Wednesday. This match was rescheduled due to bad weather conditions back in April.
