The semifinals are set in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and Real Salt Lake’s rivalry with Sporting Kansas City is set to write another chapter. With SKC’s 3-1 comeback win over the Houston Dynamo in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, the stage was set for an August 12 clash between the rival clubs with a storied recent history.
It’s easy to point to the 2013 MLS Cup Final as the catalyst to the rivalry, when Sporting Kansas City won in controversial fashion on its home field. However, there was a contentious relationship between the two clubs well before that and each match has added to that strife.
Now with another big tournament match in the Open Cup, it will only add to the lengthy history between the two clubs.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. MT on August 12.
