HERRIMAN, Utah (Thursday, September 15, 2022) – Real Salt Lake forward Rubio Rubin has been selected for the Guatemala National Team’s upcoming friendly matches against Colombia on Saturday, September 24 and Honduras on Tuesday, September 27. Rubin recently made the one-time federation switch to represent Guatemala, having previously appeared for the United States.
The forward is in the midst of his second season with Real Salt Lake, having recorded eight goals and five assists in 55 matches. Additionally, Rubin was awarded the 2021 MLS Goal of the Year for his thrilling bicycle kick goal against San Jose Earthquakes.
Rubin, 26, made his debut for Guatemala on June 2, 2022 during the CONCACAF Nations League tournament against French Guinea. Since then he has made four more appearances, scoring two goals, both of which came against the Dominican Republic on June 14, 2022.
With 43 points accumulated through 30 games of the 2022 MLS campaign, Real Salt Lake (11-10-10, 43pts, 7th West) is part of a four-team glut in the race for the 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs. Now guided the last 43 games by former USA star Pablo Mastroeni, the Club’s sixth head coach in 18 seasons, RSL has the opportunity to qualify for the MLS postseason for the 12th time in 15 seasons and earn a home playoff match for the first time since 2019 with a successful finish. For the first time in Club history, RSL has opened the year with 15 consecutive sellouts in Sandy, Utah – the 8-2-5 (W-L-T) home record is amongst the best in MLS this season.
