SANDY, Utah (Friday, September 3, 2021) – The Real Salt Lake Special Olympics Unified Team is set to play its first match since the 2019 season on Saturday, September 4 against RSL Unified Alumni Team at Rio Tinto Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. MT following the conclusion of Real Salt Lake’s home match against FC Dallas.
“We are excited to see the RSL Unified Team return to the RIOT this Saturday! This match is a favorite within the organization every year,” Director of Community and Player Engagement Kyle Schroeder said. “The RSL Unified Team is a tremendous example of the unifying power of sport and the organization’s commitment to inclusion and providing soccer to all. “
The RSL Unified Team is part of Unified Sports and the Special Olympics that elect to participate in the Major League Soccer Unified Exchange program. The alumni team is made up of 12 former members of the RSL Unified Team and will be led by Head Coach Bryan Karren and Assistant Coaches Rylee and Sean Johnson.
Real Salt Lake General Manager Elliot Fall and RSL Unified Head Coach Jenna Holland officially signed the RSL Unified Team on July 15. The team was invited to train on the pitch at Rio Tinto Stadium, use the Real Salt Lake locker room and even participate in an official media day.
Due to scheduling issues related to the current global pandemic, the RSL Unified Team will play just one match in 2021.
