Beginning as International Women’s Day in 1911 before becoming Women’s History week in 1980 and now Women’s History Month since 1987, March is a time to celebrate the contributions of women in American society. The state of Utah has a long history of women fighting for equal rights, including a strenuous and hard-fought suffrage movement towards the end of the 19th century.
To celebrate Women’s History Month and to recognize the achievements and progress made by women in Utah, we’re highlighting seven of our favorite local female-owned businesses throughout the Beehive State. - The Holistic Chef
Chef Andrea’s journey started when she experienced a number of medical deficiencies over an extended period of time. She focused on changing her diet to include more health-supportive foods, and thankfully, her symptoms left. She founded The Holistic Chef to promote healthy living through conscious cooking and nutrition. Her services include creating personalized menus, personal chef services, nutrition programs, and courses for new chefs.
- Taste Artisan Chocolate
Located on North University Avenue in Provo, Taste Artisan Chocolate offers some of the finest gourmet chocolates around. In addition to being a teahouse and curated marketplace, Taste Artisan also has its own factory located behind the store front. You can visit owner Morgan Coleman and her husband Char at the factory to see all their hard work come to life. Cacao is sourced from across the globe and is mixed with other ingredients from local farmers and vendors, mixing international flavoring with homegrown products. The factory also offers a variety of different experiences including taste testing, afternoon tea, and fondues, as well as catering private events.
- Shades Brewing
Alexandria Ortiz started Shades Brewing back in 2010 with her husband, Trent. Thirteen years later, Shades Brewing is expanding, opening a new Shades Taproom and Grill located on State Street in Salt Lake City. Along with the original Brewery location on West Utopia in South Salt Lake, Shades prides itself in unorthodoxy, challenging the norm in both ingredients and experience. Boasting a large variety of choices varying in flavor and brew, there is a taste for everyone to enjoy. In addition to visiting their two locations, you can also purchase their beers at local grocery stores, the Utah liquor store, local bars and restaurants.
- The Simple Nest
Perhaps you’ve had the same home decor for a little too long. If you’re looking to switch it up, look no further than The Simple Nest. Specializing in home furnishings, antiques, timeless décor, gifts, new or vintage finds and even special holiday items, The Simple Nest has everything you need to turn your house into a home. Aubrey Jo Memmott’s store is located at 1531 Major St. in Salt Lake City, showing off impressive interior design ideas sure to inspire customers.
- Canyon Canines
Catered to our furry four-legged friends, owner Andrea Isabell started Canyon Canines in January, 2022. Her goal was to create a business that provides structured group hikes for dogs in the Cache Valley area. Through these outdoor adventures, the staff at Canyon Canines helps dogs to learn trail etiquette, interact with other dogs, and behave better at home. From pick up to drop off, their staff prioritizes the mental and physical well-being of all dogs who tag along for the ride.
- Pig and a Jelly Jar
Founded by Amy Wanderly-Britt, Pig and a Jelly Jar is one of the fastest growing breakfast and brunch spots in the state. What once began with five employees and a chicken and waffle recipe has now expanded to over 70 employees in three separate locations in Utah. Inspired by Wanderly-Britt’s southern upbringing, Pig and a Jelly Jar serves a from-scratch menu adding a modern take to southern comfort food. A broad array of drinks are also offered.
