MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (Saturday, July 14, 2018) – Real Salt Lake (9-9-2, 29 points) mounted a late comeback effort, but a 3-0 deficit accrued over 17 minutes in the second half proved too deep a hole as RSL fell 3-2 to Minnesota United FC on Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.
FW Joao Plata came off the bench to score two goals, but they came after Minnesota had staked a 3-0 lead off a goal and two assists from Darwin Quintero and RSL Head Coach Mike Petke was ejected by referee Alan Kelly. It came after a lackluster first half that appeared to lean RSL’s way.
Real Salt Lake kept Minnesota from causing much danger in the opening half, limiting the home side to just two first-half shots while taking five. Late in the half, MF Damir Kreilach got on the end of a ball in the box and sent a shot on frame, but Minnesota goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth was there for the save and the match went into the break scoreless.
Then Minnesota opened the second half on the front foot when Ibson scored his third goal of the season in the 51st minute. On a ball from the back, Darwin Quintero outmaneuvered DF Justen Glad and turned into the box up the right side. He collected, then passed to Ibson coming down the weak side for a first-time shot that found the net to make it 1-0. In an ensuing argument with Kelly, Petke was ejected from the match, leaving the team in the hands of Assistant Coach Freddy Juarez for the remainder of the match.
Quintero would add one of his own in the 62nd minute when he lofted a ball from the wing past GK Nick Rimando for his seventh goal of the season and a 2-0 lead. Miguel Ibarra would make it 3-0 – on another assist from Quintero – in the 68th minute with his fifth goal of the season.
After subbing into the match late, Plata made an impact when he tallied his fourth goal of the year in the 77th minute. On a free kick just outside the box, Plata played a quick touch to MF Albert Rusnák, who touched it back to Plata for a bending shot through the Minnesota wall and past Shuttleworth to make it 3-1. He added another off a cross from DF Brooks Lennon in the 85th minute, but RSL couldn’t find the late equalizer and fell 3-2.
The loss drops RSL to 1-8-1 on the road this season.
UP NEXT: RSL returns home to host the Colorado Rapids in the second match in the Rocky Mountain Cup. Salt Lake won the first meeting 3-0 on April 21 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Saturday’s match will be followed by a fireworks show celebrating Pioneer Day.
