FRISCO, Texas (Monday, April 11, 2022) – In its second match of the 2022 Generation Adidas Cup, the Real Salt Lake Academy U17s drew 1-1 with Mexico’s Tigres UANL, but were unable to secure an extra point in penalties.
On another windy day at Toyota Soccer Center, both sides saw opportunities early in the match with close misses in the first ten minutes including a shot by forward Terron Williams in the seventh minute that rolled across the goal. As the half progressed, RSL put on a strong defensive effort, keeping Tigres out of the net with a key save from goalkeeper Blake Kelly in the 15th minute and a free kick deflection off the wall and into the post in stoppage time. Despite some opportunistic runs from Williams and fellow forward Jaden Jackson, RSL was unable to find the back of the net before the break, finishing the half 0-0.
Coming out of halftime, RSL came out as the aggressors creating multiple opportunities and scoring a great team goal in the 34th minute. After a run down the left sideline, Williams sent a ball into Jackson who was able to lay it off to midfielder Izzy Amparo for the easy finish. The U17s continued to control the second half, but Tigres were able to break through in stoppage time, scoring the equalizer off a corner kick.Â
The match moved to penalty kicks to award an extra point. Despite two-near saves from Kelly, RSL U17s fell 4-2 in penalties, leaving match day two with one point.
