The Real Salt Lake Academy U-15 finished the group stage of the Augsburg Whitsun Tournament, hosted by FC Augsburg, with a 1-0 victory over Young Boys thanks to a penalty kick goal from defender Luis Rivera. Â
Young Boys looked to jump out to an early lead, putting a shot on goal within the first minute, but a reaction save from Rocco Von Marees and a goal-line clearance from Javier Ruelas prevented what seemed to be a sure goal.Â
Breaking away towards goal, forward Van Parker was taken down inside the penalty box in the sixth minute. Rivera stepped up to the spot and put a left-footed shot inside the left post to take the 1-0 lead. Throughout the next 11 minutes the two sides battled in the midfield, but it was RSL who took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.Â
RSL had perhaps its best chance of the second half in the 26th minute when forward Omar Marquez drove towards goal before cutting back, hitting a low cross in towards Lorenzo Tuch. But Tuch’s shot slipped over the crossbar and out for a goal kick. Young Boys pushed in the final minutes to equalize, but RSL was able to hold off their attack, taking the 1-0 victory in the final match of the day.Â
After finishing the group stage with a 1-2-1 record, the RSL Academy placed third in their group and will now face Borussia Dortmund at 2:15 a.m. MT for a spot in the fifth-place match.
