Real Salt Lake will be spending some quality time in Washington, D.C., this week.
First off they will face off against D.C. United on Wednesday in a US Open Cup play-in match. Then, on Saturday, they face D.C. United again in a regular league matchup. Both contests will take place at RFK Stadium.
Oh yes, one other thing—in between those matches they have been invited to the White House. They’ll spend some quality time with President Obama, who has invited them in order to recognize their MLS Cup Championship from a season ago.
For the affair recognizing the 2009 version of Real Salt Lake, they will have former player Yura Movsisyan in attendance, along with former assistant coach Brian Johnson.
One notable will be missing: Robbie Findley. However, before you feel too sorry for him, remember he’s on his way to the World Cup. And he and his US teammates were already able to meet President Obama, along with former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden, last week as the dignitaries gave them a sendoff as they make their final preparations before leaving for South Africa.
Real Salt Lake captain Kyle Beckerman is from the Greater DC area, having attended Arundel High School in Gambrills, Md., less than 30 miles outside of the Nation’s capital.
When asked whether he ever imagined that he would get a chance to meet the President of the United States he said: “Never. I sure didn’t and I wasn’t too far from it either. ... I’m really excited. It should it neat—we’re gonna go meet the President.”
