On Thursday, Real Salt Lake hosts its first CONCACAF Champions League match since October, 23, 2012, when Santa Tecla FC visits Rio Tinto Stadium in RSL’s third match of the Group Stage. It’s an important match for placement should RSL advance to the Championship Stage, which starts next February, and the club is confident that the home field advantage of Rio Tinto Stadium can help the team in the international tournament.
Currently, Real Salt Lake is sitting on a 526-minute shutout streak dating back to the first match of the 2012 tournament. At home, RSL hasn’t allowed a goal in CCL since Humberto Suazo scored the series-winner just before halftime in the 2011 Championship Final, a span of 225 minutes without allowing a goal at Rio Tinto Stadium.
RSL currently sits atop the Group Stage with four points from two matches (1-0-1), tied on points with Municipal (1-1-1), while Santa Tecla trails with two points (0-1-2). That creates several scenarios that will see RSL advance to the Championship Round.
