Stories to Watch:
The Quest for the Cup
This year’s Rocky Mountain Cup will be decided first by number of wins in the three-game series and if the RMC winner cannot be determined on Saturday, then the cup will be claimed on October 16 when the two teams face off at Rio Tinto Stadium. Thanks to RSL’s victory at Rio Tinto Stadium earlier this year, a win in Colorado would secure a return trip for the trophy back to Utah. Since the cup’s inception, Real Salt Lake has won the trophy 11 times, compared to Colorado’s five.Â
New and Old Faces
Since last playing one another, Colorado has made several roster changes, adding midfielder Mark-Antony Kaye from LAFC and forward Dominique Badji from Nashville SC. On the other hand, the Rapids lost Nicolas Benezet who was traded to Seattle Sounders FC and Sam Vines who signed with Royal Antwerp in Belgium. Â
Sounds Familiar
Colorado enters Saturday’s match having not lost since falling 3-0 to Real Salt Lake. In its four matches since, the team has beaten Austin, Houston and the LA Galaxy and drawn with Sporting KC. RSL has also played three of those opponents since last facing Colorado, earning victories over Austin and Houston, and dropping a tight game on the road to the Galaxy.Â
Connections: Real Salt Lake Assistant Coach Pablo Mastroeni played for Colorado from 2002-2013 and coached the Rapids from 2014-2017. In July his former club retired his number, making him the first individual to receive the honor for the Rapids. As a player he led the team to the 2010 MLS Cup and appeared in more than 200 matches. As a coach he led the team to its best regular season record in 2016, finishing the year second in voting for the MLS Coach of the Year award.
