Real Salt Lake Loans Douglas Martinez to San Diego Loyal of USL Championship

HERRIMAN, Utah – (Monday, August 23, 2021) – Real Salt Lake has announced a loan agreement to send forward Douglas Martinez to San Diego Loyal SC in the USL Championship for the remainder of the 2021 season.

“This is a great opportunity for Douglas and we are looking forward to monitoring his progress with San Diego for the remainder of the season," RSL Technical Director Kurt Schmid said.

Martinez first joined the club as a member of the Real Monarchs at the start of the 2019 season. He went on to lead the team with 17 goals in 25 appearances and added seven assists, aiding the team in lifting its first USL Championship trophy. His offensive prowess earned him a contract with Real Salt Lake and he made his Major League Soccer debut in a 1-0 win over San Jose on September 11, 2019.

In 24 matches with Real Salt Lake, Martinez has scored two goals. He also added two goals in seven matches with the Real Monarchs this season, including the fastest-ever goal in team history, 42 seconds into the match against San Diego on August 7, 2021.

Internationally, Martinez has made four appearances at the senior level for Honduras, scoring one goal, and recently was RSL’s lone representative at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
