FRISCO, Texas (Saturday, August 29, 2015) – Real Salt Lake continued its Texas woes on Saturday night against FC Dallas with a 2-0 defeat at Toyota Stadium to fall to 1-11-2 all-time on the road against Dallas and 2-19-3 all-time in Texas.
RSL fell behind in the second half on a penalty and had a chance to equalize late in the game, but when the attempt from MF Javier Morales hit off the post it opened the door for Dallas to capitalize and put the game out of reach with a second goal.
Dallas was aggressive from the start and managed three shots in the first five minutes. On the second shot, which came in the third minute, Rimando cleared it with his feet while retreating to his line after the ball spilled to David Texeira in a scramble in the box. Two minutes later, Fabian Castillo got out on a run up the left side and his shot caromed off of DF Tony Beltran and narrowly missed the near post for a corner kick. It was one of 12 blocked shots for Real Salt Lake on the night, the most in a match for RSL since Opta began tracking the stat in 2011.
The match went into halftime with both teams registering just one shot on goal.
In the second half, those chances were more prevalent and while Dallas outshot RSL 21-10 on the night, the shots on goal advantage was just 5-4.
In the 51st minute, Dallas took a 1-0 lead on a penalty whistled on DF Demar Phillips. Tesho Akindele got into the box and moved toward the right side before going down just right of the penalty spot. Referee Ted Unkel blew his whistle and pointed to the spot and Akindele converted the penalty, shooting to Rimando’s right while the RSL keeper dove left.
Salt Lake had a chance to equalize with a penalty of its own in the 78th minute.
Making his MLS debut, FW Juan Manuel Martinez drew the penalty when he was brought down in the box by Kellyn Acosta. MF Javier Morales stepped to the spot to take the kick, driving it to the keeper’s left, and while Jesse Gonzalez guessed correctly, the shot hit off the post. FW Joao Plata was the first one to the rebound, but he put it over the bar for a goal kick.
On the restart, Castillo got free on a ball from Michael Barrios and blasted it inside the far post for his ninth goal of the season to make it 2-0 in the 79th minute, putting the game out of reach for Salt Lake.
Real Salt Lake will take next week away from MLS play, then return to action on Sept. 12 against the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.

- With his start on Saturday, MF Javier Morales moved into a tie for third all-time with former DF Nat Borchers with 205 regular season appearances for the Claret-and-Cobalt.
- The goal by FC Dallas in the 51st minute ended a streak of 315 consecutive shutout minutes for RSL when DF Jamison Olave is on the field.
- With their yellow cards in the match, MF Luke Mulholland and DF Tony Beltran will be suspended for RSL’s match on Sept. 12 against the Houston Dynamo.
