Welcoming Week is an annual celebration that highlights the contributions of immigrants and refugees, while underscoring the vital role that communities play in creating a sense of belonging for everyone. This year, Real Salt Lake and the Utah Royals have teamed up with local organizations to host a series of events that bring together people from diverse backgrounds, offering both a platform to celebrate new Americans and to support the local refugee community.
Welcome Refugee Soccer Camp
One of the week's key events is RSL's and Royals' Welcome Refugee Soccer Camp. This camp provides an exciting opportunity for 60 local refugee youth to participate in soccer drills and activities led by RSL and Royals' coaches and players. The initiative not only fosters a sense of community among the youth but also allows them to experience the camaraderie of the sport. As part of the celebration, these young athletes will be special guests at the RSL game Wednesday, September 18 and will be recognized at halftime.
Naturalization Ceremony
In conjunction with the Utah Citizenship Initiative, RSL will host a Naturalization Ceremony, where 25 individuals will officially become American citizens. This significant event, supported by the State Department and Utah's local government, will take place at the stadium before Wednesday's match. Fans are invited to help honor the perseverance and dedication of those who have gone through the rigorous process of becoming U.S. citizens, and to celebrate their future contributions to the community.
Water Wheel Food Truck in the Plaza
Another highlight of RSL’s Welcoming Week is the Water Wheel Food Truck on The Plaza. Affiliated with the Spice Kitchen Incubator, this Syrian food truck offers a taste of authentic Middle Eastern cuisine. It’s not only a delicious addition to the event but also a representation of the entrepreneurial spirit of immigrant communities, showing how diversity enriches the local food scene.
