SANDY, Utah (Friday, March 8, 2018) â Real Monarchs SLC opens its 2019 season on Saturday, March 9 when it visits Sacramento Republic FC with kickoff set for 8:30 p.m. MT from Papa Murphyâs Park. The match will be the much anticipated first in charge of the club for Head Coach MartĂn Vasquez after his appointment to the position in the offseason.
For the third consecutive season, the Monarchs will open the season away from home when it visits Republic FC in a battle between two of the Westâs marquee sides before opening its home slate on March 16 against expansion side El Paso Locomotive FC.
The Monarchs boast a 5-2-4 (19 points) all-time record against Sacramento, including 2-1-3 (9 points) all-time record at Papa Murphyâs Park. In 2018, the Monarchs and Republic FC played to a physical 0-0 draw in early-July after the Monarchs claimed a 1-0 victory in late-May at Zions Bank Stadium.

For 2019, the Monarchs return a familiar core of players from the 2018 season as DFs James Moberg, Kalen Ryden, Konrad Plewa, Andrew Brody & Stanley Okumu lead the backline of one of the leagueâs most elite sides. MFs Justin Portillo, Maikel Chang, Jack Blake, Josh Heard and Masta Kacher all return carrying with them a slew of experience into their second season in the midfield with the Monarchs.
New faces in the squad include players with ample USL Championship experience like DF Noah Powder, FW Douglas Martinez. Panamanian international MF Ricardo Avila highlights the seasonâs newcomers as the World Cup veteran is joined by FW Lionel Etoundi, MF Damian German and Honduran youth international FW Luis Palma. RSL Academy products Jordan Pena and Steve Jasso also exemplify the growth pipeline between the Academy and the professional ranks for the 2019 season. GKs Todd Morton and Evan Finney round out the list of new faces set to contribute to the Monarchs during the 2019 season.
The Monarchs will return home to host league newcomer El Paso Locomotive FC at Zions Bank Stadium on March 16, a venue in which the Monarchs earned a league-best home record of 13-2-2 in 2018.
