Preview: Real Salt Lake at San Jose Earthquakes

SANDY, Utah (Friday, September 30, 2016) – Real Salt Lake kicks off the final month of its 12th Major League Soccer season with a Saturday night kickoff at San Jose, traveling to Avaya Stadium against the host Earthquakes for an 8:30 p.m. MT kickoff. The game will be televised via KMYU with David James and Brian Dunseth on the call, and can also heard via RSL outlets 100.7 FM (English, Jay Nolly, Spencer Warne & Jeremy Horton) & 102.3 FM / 1600 AM (Spanish, Fernando Hortal & Nelson Moran). Pre-game coverage airs live locally on 100.7 FM at 7:30 p.m. MT.

Saturday’s match at San Jose is the first of three reg. season games for RSL in October, with only a critical home match on Sunday, October 16 against rival Kansas City splitting road trips to San Jose and Seattle on the season’s “Decision Day” – Sunday, October 23.

RSL split the series at San Jose last year, splitting its first two visits to Avaya Stadium with a 1-0 win on Easter weekend courtesy of a scintillating Javier Morales free kick, and falling 0-1 when former ‘Quakes MF Matias Perez Garcia found the back of the net in the 87th minute.  All-time, RSL boasts a 5-5-3 mark away at San Jose, the Claret-and-Cobalt’s best road mark against a Western Conference team (RSL 4-3-2 at New England and 3-3-4 at Chicago, along with 1-0-4 at Philadelphia).

Scoreboard watching is in full effect for RSL the rest of the way, as Saturday’s 7:00 p.m. MT kickoff at Colorado featuring the Portland Timbers – as well as all other matchups involving Dallas, LA, Seattle, Kansas City and the Rapids, in a tightly-contested Western Conference race – holds bearing on RSL’s postseason seeding, as Head Coach Jeff Cassar’s club can officially clinch its spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs with a win Saturday AND a Portland loss.

According to nearly all of the predictive models and algorithms for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, RSL has approximately a 95% chance of being one of the six Western Conference sides in the postseason - follow THIS LINK for more specific breakdowns. With just three games remaining this regular-season, RSL remains highly likely to host a home playoff game as a top four seed in the West, but must capture the full three points in each of the club's remaining games – at San Jose, as well as on Sunday, October 16, against rival Sporting Kansas City to feel secure. To OPT-IN NOW for your 2017 Season Ticket Membership location and in order to secure this year's preferred Playoff pricing, please contact your Fan Relations representative at 801.727.2702!
