2016 REAL MONARCHS NOTES
MONARCHS v. LA GALAXY II – Sat., April 2, 2016 – 7:00 p.m. MT

MONARCHS GAIN SERVICES OF FIVE DURING RSL HARDSHIP: Last week, Real Salt Lake loaned eight players to the Monarchs for its opening weekend at home, while this week sees a number of Monarchs players in the RSL mix due to the MLS club’s suspension/injury epidemic affecting the roster at Kansas City.

Two Monarchs players who excelled last week – DF Emilio Orozco and MF Andrew Brody – have been added to the RSL travel roster and will not be available to Freddy Juarez’ side this weekend, opening the door for further opportunities for other players.

SUPER-SUB ORELLANA COMES UP HUGE IN OPENER: Last week, as the Monarchs team emerged from a difficult malaise no doubt triggered by the sight of a teammate collapsing on the field, it was the spark provided by 88th-minute substitute FW Maikon Orellana that captured 3 points for the Claret-and-Cobalt side. Just two minutes after the Provo, Utah native’s academy coach Freddy Juarez inserted him, Orellana ran on to a header into space from RSL FW Devon Sandoval and absolutely roofed a shot from the top of the six with authority, giving the Monarchs its fifth-consecutive win at home dating back to 2015.

CAPARELLI, DURAN LOANED TO KITSAP PUMAS FOR PDL SEASONING: Thursday, the Monarchs announced loan deals for two players – DF Jony Caparelli and MF Edgar Duran – to PDL side Kitsap Pumas for the duration of the 2016 PDL season.

"We think this is an important step in their development, as Jony and Edgar are still at an age they need to get games," said Real Monarchs Head Coach Freddy Juarez.  "The opportunity to send them to a very good PDL club, one that will be in Open Cup, offers the chance for Jony and Edgar to play 20-plus games in addition to preseason matches, possibly as many as 30 games in 3 months.  Hopefully, when they come back to us, they're in a little bit better shape, better rhythm and can help contribute to our team."

Caparelli, 21, played for the Chivas USA academy before joining the Real Salt Lake organization. He has yet to appear in a USL game, but he featured regularly for the Monarchs in friendlies over the past two years. Duran, 19, is a product of RSL's Arizona-based academy. He made two appearances for the Monarchs in 2015 after signing late last season after a year at Casa Grande, Ariz.

AN UPDATE FROM RSL MF OMAR HOLNESS: In the 33rd minute of last Saturday’s Monarchs game against Saint Louis, 2016 First-Round MLS SuperDraft Pick Omar Holness suffered a seizure on the field, delaying the game for 20 minutes as the Jamaican international was attended to and rushed to a local hospital, where he was later released just prior to midnight, thankfully able to sleep in his own bed. Omar released the following statement from Rio Tinto Stadium’s locker room on Monday:

We have so much to be thankful for, and I have so many people to say thank you to.
To the fans - thank you for all of your support and your messages in the last few days.  You have really warmed my heart.  I'm working hard on the road to recovery, and its important for everyone to know that I'll be back soon.
I'm so happy to be back at Rio Tinto Stadium with a great group of guys.
Obviously, my professional debut last Saturday never turned out the way I hoped, but I'm just grateful to be alive and I thank God for that fact.
The first thing I asked at the hospital was whether or not we had won the game.  When Coach Cassar told me that Mikey had the game-winner, I was ecstatic.  That was definitely a happy ending to the night.
To my RSL teammates and my Monarchs teammates - thank you very much.  I'm happy that I have such a great group of guys around me to be there and support me.
To the guys on the field and to the St. Louis players as well - thank you.  The way you guys reacted was just remarkable.
To the medical staff, from the guys at the stadium to the guys at the hospital - thank you for your support and looking after me.

SCHULER STAYS IN RSL FAMILY, JOINS MONARCHS: Two weeks ago, the Monarchs announced the signing of former Real Salt Lake DF Chris Schuler, keeping the six-year MLS veteran at Rio Tinto Stadium for the 2016 season while he continues to rehab a foot injury that ended his 2015 year after just five matches with RSL (and two with the Monarchs).

Schuler, 28, played six seasons with Real Salt Lake after being selected in the third round, 39th overall, in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft.  He played 80 matches in six seasons, highlighted by his career-best 25 appearances in 2014.
