Desiree Scott and the Canada National Team got off to a fast start in their opening match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, defeating Cameroon 1-0 behind a goal from centerback Kadeisha Buchanan.
As the anchor of the midfield, Scott played the full 90 minutes for Canada, earning her 144th cap. Scott played a vital role in maintaining constant pressure on the Cameronian side, in turn preserving her title as “the Destroyer.”
Despite holding a majority of the pressure and several shots on goal, the scoreline reflected an evenly matched game for most of the first half. In the dwindling minutes of the opening half Canada finally broke through when Janine Beckie sent cross into the box off a corner kick which found the head of an oncoming Buchanan who towered over Cameroon’s defense to place the ball into the back of the net. The goal would prove to be the deciding event for the match.
Canada and Scott will play their second of three matches in the group stage of the tournament on June 15 against fellow Utah Royals FC DF Katie Bowen and New Zealand. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. MT.
