Pablo Ruiz: Goal of the Matchday

Real Salt Lake midfielder Pablo Ruiz has won the Major League Soccer Goal of the Matchday in a goal that will go down as one of the very best in RSL history.

On the Argentine’s 100 appearance for the Club, he recognized that D.C. goalkeeper Tyler Miller was off his line and then belted a 68.24 yard bomb so precisely that it nestled into the right upper 90 degree corner of the goal, right above Miller’s outstretched gloves.

A stunning strike that brought the attention of the world to RSL and their 24-year-old midfielder.

To put this into perspective, the longest field goal ever recorded in the National Football League is 66 yards by longtime Baltimore Ravens’ kicker Justin Tucker.

Ruiz not only kicked it 2 yards further, he did it while placing the ball inch perfectly to keep it out of the arms of the goalkeeper. This comparison isn’t meant to play down Tucker’s incredible achievement of course, but rather highlight just how difficult a feat Ruiz pulled off last weekend.

Now that’s how you cap off 100 appearances.

RSL fans can catch Ruiz and the rest of the team this weekend against Minnesota United right here at America First Field. Tickets available here.
