COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Wednesday, June 29, 2016)- Real Monarchs SLC (5-7-4, 19pts) fell short to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC for a 1-0 loss Wednesday night at Switchbacks Stadium.
The Switchbacks came out aggressive scoring in the 13th minute of play. Miguel Gonzalez had the ball outside the Monarchs 18-yard box when 3 Monarchs players crashed to defend Gonzalez. The Colorado Springs forward was able to bounce the ball to Jordan Burt who finished the ball with one touch off of his left foot for his first goal of this season.
The game heated up in the second half with three yellow card cautions being given in the first ten minutes, including Monarchs FW Devon Sandoval and DF Emilio Orozco, with three more yellow card cautions given throughout the rest of the game.
In a last moment effort to equalize the game, the Monarchs got a free kick on the offensive half taken by DF Jony Caparelli. Orozco was able to get the ball off an attempted clearance from the Switchbacks defender, and connected an on-frame shot that was headed to the far corner of the net. Luke Vercollone defended the shot with an outstretched arm, but no call was made. Sandoval got the rebound but shot over the top of the goal.
This game completes the stretch of 11 games away from Rio Tinto Stadium for the Monarchs. They return to the RioT on Saturday to host the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at 7:00 PM MT. Tickets are available at RSL.com.
