How RSL Created The Peak Utah Kit

Real Salt Lake is thrilled to announce the newest iteration of the Claret-and-Cobalt’s primary kit. The Peak Utah kit.

When looking for inspiration, Real Salt Lake VP of Marketing and Game Production, Tyler Gibbons didn’t have to look far.

“This isn’t Denver, you don’t have to drive two hours to get to the mountains,” Gibbons joked with a playful jab at Rocky Mountain Cup rivals Colorado Rapids.

“I don't think we've ever done anything in a way that shows the symbol that the mountains really are for everyone in Utah,” Gibbons said.

“They drive a lot of our life here everyday. Citizens who escape there for recreation, or just, you know, therapy. When we were putting it together, we were thinking, ‘how can we do a classic RSL blue and red kit, but also kind of symbolize the state that we represent?”

The mountains are at the forefront of the Peak Utah Kit. The red base of the jersey is flanked by cobalt sleeves with a three peaked cobalt mountain across the chest, and vertical cobalt columns rising from the bottom.

Gibbons credits classic Adidas Argentina kits for his inspiration with the stripes. He wanted to do a classic column kit, but with a modern Utah twist.

Another design theme he and former RSL Art Director, David Dryden, wanted to work with was shapes.

When walking down the back hallway of America First Field, looking at all of the RSL kits of past years, they noticed that the Club had never experimented much with shapes and wanted to incorporate it more in their designs going forward. The hexagonal patterns of the Beehive State Kit last year and now the columns and triangles of the Peak Utah kit this year.

It’s often said that Real Salt Lake has one of the best natural landscapes in all of Major League Soccer. The Wasatch Mountain range that begins 10 miles from America First Field & can be seen from all angles inside the stadium. The columns represent the buildings and human life found beneath those mountains that we in Utah call home.

“It's an artistic representation of everything,” Gibbons said. “It's just kind of like an overarching process and we knew the fans would love the Beehive kit. And I think that's the focus of everything.  For us, and the simple way that I'll always say how we want the kits to go is that it's hyper local.

“I'm making kits for people in Utah. I'm not making kits for people in New York or Atlanta or Seattle. I'm making kits for the folks that live in this state that are RSL fans. And to me, the mountains are an everyday part of our life.”

The RSL Team Store is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
