Douglas Martinez and Honduras got off to a fast start in their first match of the Concacaf Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Friday afternoon, defeating Haiti 3-0 to earn the crucial three points.
The Real Salt Lake forward started the match for his home country and played the first 45 minutesbefore subbing off at halftime in a match that was all but decided at the break.
Honduras broke through Haiti’s line of defense in the 14th minute when Darixon Vuelto hammered in a penalty kick that slipped right through the fingers of the Haitian goalkeeper.
Just four minutes later Edwin Rodriguez ran onto a ball played over the top of the defensive line, beating out the goalkeeper with a kick to the lower right-corner to double the lead.
Vuelto finished off his afternoon in the 38th minute when the goalkeeper cleared a shot directly to his feet, giving the team their third and final goal of the match.
The team held off Haiti in the second half to secure the victory and catapult themselves to the top of Group B.
Honduras will return to the pitch on Monday, March 22 when theytake on El Salvador, before finishing the group stage on Thursday, March 25 against Canada.
