Generation Adidas Cup Recap: Day 2

Philadelphia Union (3 [3]) vs D.C. United U-17 (3 [4])

The U-17 bracket of the 2020 GA Cup regional qualifiers got off to an exciting start Saturday morning with D.C. United beating Philadelphia Union in a penalty shootout. In the first half it seemed as if the Union may have the upper-hand, having scored the lone goal of the first 45 minutes, courtesy of Anthony Sorenson. But in a thrilling turn of events the second half saw D.C. crawl their way back in to the competition, netting two goals in five minutes, one by Philip Bogdanov and the other by Xavier O'Neil.

In the 72nd minute Philadelphia evened the score with Caden Stafford single-handedly dribbled the ball down the left side to slip it in to the back of the net. Just minutes later United jumped back in front when Adrien Wheaton-Schopp sent a rocket of a shot deep into the net. With seconds left on the clock a controversial call saw the Union get a free kick outside the 18-yard-box that began a domino effect leading to the final goal of regulation from Jackson Gilman, leaving the score tied at 3-3.

In the penalty kick shootout, it was D.C. Untied goalkeeper Sebastian Conlon who stepped up as the hero, making two crucial saves to help lead his team to victory.
