Real Salt Lake 1 vs. Seattle Sounders 2
June 23, 2021; Lumen Field
Real Salt Lake (3-2-3, 12 points); Seattle Sounders (7-0-3, 24 points)
Man of the Match: Homegrown defender Justen Glad played a staunch role on the RSL backline, stopping several chances from the home team while also contributing one of only two shots on goal. Glad added four blocks, four clearances and three interceptions to keep Seattle at bay.
Telling Stat: Real Salt Lake have not won at Lumen Field since May 26, 2018, when the team earned a 1-0 victory. RSL came close to a result, but a tough penalty call on Anderson Julio saw Sounders FC go up 2-1 with mere moments left on the clock.
What You Missed: Real Salt Lake captain Albert Rusnak gave the team new life in the 79th minute when he stepped up the penalty spot and sent the shot sailing into the back of the net to equalize. The Slovakian created the team’s only other shot on goal, providing service to defender Justen Glad off of a corner kick. Additionally, forward Bobby Wood made his long-awaited Real Salt Lake and Major League Soccer debut.
So What: Despite its best efforts, Real Salt Lake suffered their first defeat on the road in 2021, falling 2-1 to the league’s last remaining undefeated team. However, RSL returns to Rio Tinto Stadium in just three days' time to take on Houston Dynamo FC for their third and final game in a nine-day stretch.
