GA Cup Recap: Day 3

Los Angeles Galaxy U-15 1-2 Portland Timbers U-15

In Monday morning’s 2018 Generation Adidas Cup Fall Regional matchup the Portland Timbers U-15s team scored twice on either side of halftime to defeat the LA Galaxy U-15s.  LA was first to get on the scoresheet after a series of one touch give-and-go passes fell to the feet of Jason Cruz, who tucked the ball calmly into the back of the net. Portland responded by finding a goal with the last kick of the half. It came after an LA defensive clearance bounced to Portland’s Abraham Villalobos outside the box. Villalobos struck it sweetly into the top corner with a powerful volley for the equalizing goal.

After the break, both teams searched for a go-ahead goal, with Portland ultimately finding the back of the net. Kieran Halsinger hit a well-placed ball past LA’s keeper midway through the half. LA had few chances in the final third but never got a hold on the game as Portland secured a 2-1 victory.

Los Angeles FC U-15s 1-0 Colorado Rapids U-15s

In a tight Monday morning match up between LAFC and Colorado Rapids, the boys from California fought to come out on top taking the goal advantage on a 1-0 score line. The two sides started hot but could not find the footing needed in the attacking third. LA was awarded an early opportunity as some players got tangled in the box during a corner, giving LA a kick from the spot that was sent wide of the post. LA kicked up the pace late in the first trapping the Rapids into a defensive rhythm and forcing Colorado goalkeeper Isaac Nehme into multiple saves.

LAFC kept its pressure going, sending Kevin Jimenez down the left wing, where he used speed to get in behind against the goalkeeper, providing the California side its game-winning goal in the second half with a shot into the far side for the first and only goal of the game. During the dying minutes of the game, Colorado began firing on all cylinders, throwing LA into the defense, in search of the equalizing goal. However, it was not meant to be as the high pressure LAFC back line kept the shutout to close out its venture at the 2018 Generation adidas Cup Fall Regional.

The Seattle Sounders FC U-17s and Colorado Rapids U-17s faced off on day three of the 2018 Generation adidas Cup Fall Regional, in a match that saw the Sounders keep the clean sheet over Colorado in a 2-0 win. Both teams came out of the gates hot, with Seattle controlling the game with a slight edge. The momentum continued to swing between the two until Seattle found the go-ahead goal late in the first half through Ethan Dobbelaere after Colorado’s Abraham Rodriguez deflected a shot into the air that fell in the path of Dobbelaere for a volley into the far corner.

The Sounders took its momentum into the second half, doubling its lead in the early goings after Daniel Leyva’s shot went just wide, bouncing off the far post where Austin Brummet cleaned up in front of an open goal. Colorado Rapids were not discouraged, putting aggressive fast paced plays forward in search of the elusive goals, but the ironclad Seattle defense prevented the Rapids from finding the back of the net and earning a clean sheet in its final U-17 match of the weekend.

LA Galaxy U-17s 1-0 San Jose Earthquakes U-17s

The final matchup of the 2018 U-17 Generation adidas Cup Fall Regional saw the California derby of LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes play to a 1-0 finish in favor of LA Galaxy. After taking a moment to find the pace of the game, LA Galaxy opened the scoring through a headed effort courtesy of Andre Ramos as Cameron Dunbar found space on the right side to serve the cross. Galaxy would go on to use the goal as motivation to continue the attack but would see the break come with a one goal lead.

San Jose changed the game in the second half, applying high pressure around the Galaxy goal. The LA Galaxy backline played well to cut out the attack and make clearances before any danger came in to change the score line. As the Galaxy began to swing control of the ball in its favor in the second half, Earthquakes goalkeeper Marcelo Echeverria read the Galaxy attack to register impressive saves to prevent an extended lead, keeping the game without a goal in the second half.
