GA Cup Recap: Day 2

LAFC U-15s 3 - 0 San Jose Earthquakes U-15s

The U-15 California derby of the 2018 Generation Adidas Cup saw Los Angeles FC shut out its in-state rivals, San Jose Earthquakes by a 3-0 score line. LAFC started the match strong putting high pressure in on the San Jose goal, but the tight defense proved to be too much for LAFC, as they were unable to find the early lead before San Jose fell into its offensive rhythm. The first half continued in a back and forth affair as each side sought the goal advantage. The advantage came at the end of the first half, after a cross served from LA’s Kevin Jimenez found Aladhir Rua who put the headed effort away to go into the second half with the lead.

LAFC didn’t lose a beat during the break, quickly doubling its lead early on as Dylan Presto got away with the ball off a poor Earthquake throw in. Presto took his speed down the right wing before cutting center to lose his defender, cleanly taking the low shot into the side netting to distance the score line. San Jose did not lose hope however, keeping the attack going on LAFC though it was not meant to be as the tight and aggressive LAFC defense kept San Jose off the scoreboard. Kevin Jimenez closed out the match late in the second half as he quickly turned a through ball around the Earthquake defense putting a fast shot to the far post for the 3-0 finish.

Colorado Rapids U-17s 4 - 1 San Jose Earthquakes U-17s

The Colorado Rapids U-17s and San Jose Earthquakes U-17s took to the pitch in a match that saw the Colorado side come away in a hard fought 4-1 victory on Saturday morning. The Rapids started the scoring early, picking up a quick goal through Jason Robles within minutes of the opening whistle by lobbing the ball just out of reach of San Jose goalkeeper Marcelo Echevaerria. Robles used his early momentum to earn himself a hat trick throughout the first half, staying open in the middle of the penalty area for an easy tap in and again slipping one just past Echevaerria at the end of the first half. San Jose wasn’t without its chances in the first half, putting Rapids ‘keeper Andrew Cordes to the test, forcing him to dive on more than one occasion to keep the Rapids with the 3-0 lead going into the break.

San Jose Earthquakes came out swinging in the second half, applying pressure through the middle early on. The pressure nearly paid off as San Jose was given the opportunity for multiple shots within the 18-yard line, which were cut out by Colorado defenders or Cordes making the save. San Jose’s Mwinso Denkabe cut the deficit by one after tapping the ball in from close range on the near post, giving San Jose a breath of life in the dying moments of the game. The match ended with Robles and Jacob Granados making a run in on goal, where a low cross was cut out by Earthquakes defender Leonardo Martinez, who accidentally deflected the ball into his own net to secure Colorado the 4-1 win.

LA Galaxy U-15 was victorious in their 2018 Generation Adidas Cup Fall Regional matchup against Vancouver Whitecaps U-15 Saturday afternoon.  Although LA had the most chances early on, it was Vancouver that opened up the scoring with a goal from striker Theo Afework in the 18th minute. Seattle Sounders U-15 1-0 Colorado Rapids U-15

Seattle Sounders U-15 came out on top against Colorado Rapids U-15 in their 2018 Generation Adidas Cup Fall Regional matchup Saturday afternoon through a 1-0 scoreline.  In the first half both teams were very evenly matched  and physical play told the story throughout and many fouls were committed on both sides.  Neither side was able to score before the halftime break.

The start of the second half was also full of gritty back and forth play, but no goals to show for the play.  Seattle finally broke through in 53rd minute after Colorado’s goalkeeper was forced to come off his line to clear the ball and stop a Seattle breakaway. His clearance fell to Sounder’s player Antonio Herrera who chipped the Rapid’s keeper before he could get back on his line for the go-ahead goal. Colorado fought relentlessly for an equalizer and in the dying minutes of the game it appeared they had gotten the equalizer, but their celebrations were cut short when they saw it had been called back for offside.
