The 2016 MLS SuperDraft is just two weeks away and already some of the media that covers the league is ramping up their coverage. This year, Real Salt Lake picks fifth overall, the earliest pick that RSL has had since picking Tony Beltran third overall in 2008. With that in mind, we thought we’d take a look at who the mock drafts from the folks at TopDrawerSoccer.com and SoccerByIves.com have Real Salt Lake picking.
Fabian Herbers, F, Creighton
Career: 62 GP, 57 GS, 28 G, 29 A
2015: 23 GP, 23 GS, 15 G, 17 A
“There should be a handful of helpful options available for RSL, and adding Herbers, a forward who can both score and create for his teammates, would be a savvy move for a team with international slots available.”
Richie Laryea, M, Akron
Career: 42 GP, 42 GS, 12 G, 9 A
2015: 22 GP, 22 GS, 11 G, 7 A
“Having just lost midfielder Luis Gil to a free transfer, we can see Jeff Cassar grabbing the talented Laryea, who can fit in a number of midfield positions in the attack. He’s coming off an outstanding season at Akron that showed his creativity and ability to break down defenses. Has yet to sign a GA deal.”
It should be noted that both players would need to sign Generation Adidas contracts to be eligible for the SuperDraft, but with January 14 right around the corner, it shouldn’t be long before those names start to become public.
Where do you think Real Salt Lake should look in the draft?
