HERRIMAN, Utah (Friday, August 23, 2019) – Real Monarchs SLC (10-7-5, 35 points, 5 West) returns to California where to face Orange County SC on Saturday, August 24. Kickoff from Championship Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. MT and can be viewed live on ESPN+.
The Monarchs picked up a hard-fought point on the road when it played to a 1-1 draw with Fresno FC at Chukchansi Park in Fresno. FW Douglas Martínez scored the club’s lone goal, marking his team-leading 10th goal of the season. The draw paired with other results in the USL Championship saw the Monarchs move to 5th place in the Western Conference with a record of 10-7-5 and 35 points.
The Monarchs now moves to play Orange County SC as it attempts to create some distance from the pack on the tight Western Conference table. Orange County has kept its playoff hopes alive, sitting just two points below the line and five points below 5thplace Real Monarchs. The two sides last met in Irvine in September 2018 in a bout that saw the Monarchs fall 5-2. Real Monarchs now has an opportunity to seek redemption in Irvine when it searches for its second-ever win at Championship Soccer Stadium on Saturday.

Moving into the second half of the 2019, Real Monarchs SLC has seen 16 unique players tally a goal in a Monarchs jersey. The attacking front is led by Honduran International FW Douglas Martinez, who recorded the club’s first hat-trick in the dominant 5-0 victory over Tacoma Defiance on July 12, pushing his goal count to nine in 15 games played. Meanwhile, MF Maikel Chang and Team Captain Jack Blake continues to provide a meaningful presence in the midfield providing a combined 13 goals and 2 assists as of July 24.
In front goal, USL Veteran DF Noah Powder has made himself a mainstay on the backline with 19 starts and appearance so far this season. DF Stanley Okumu has made an impact of his own on the Monarchs roster, having played 10 games and becoming the first player in club history to be named to a final roster for the Kenyan National Team in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Pairedwith fellow defenders, Kalen Ryden, Jordan Pena, and Konrad Plewa, the Monarchs backline has begun to solidify and limiting the opposing attack to help in pushing Real Monarchs up the Western Conference with its current run of form.
In goal, U-20 USMNT star GK David Ochoa leads the Monarchs with three clean sheets and 40 saves in 11 appearances. Ochoa has recently returned to Utah after featuring in two matches of the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup where he tallied one shutout and was named to the 2019 MLS Homegrown Game roster. GK Andrew Putna has also made appearances in goal for the Monarchs this season, tallying three clean sheets and 13 saves in six appearances for the club.
