HERRIMAN, Utah (Saturday, April 20, 2024) – Real Monarchs announce the loan departure of goalkeeper Fernando Delgado, to USL Championship side Birmingham Legion FC. Delgado will depart from the club immediately to make the Legion FC squad for tonight's match against Miami FC.
Delgao has been pivotal in the Monarchs success this season appearing in the clubs only draw and win in their 1-3-1 (W-L-D) start to the 2024 campaign. The Mexican keeper has recorded the only clean sheet of the season in the Monarchs season opener against Portland Timbers 2. The game would end in a 0-0 draw before heading to a shootout to decide the extra point, Delgado would save two helping the Monarchs secure a 5:4 win.
Along with saving 80% of shots coming his way, the shot-stopper plays a key role in the new 4-3-2-1 formation shifting into a 3-4-3 in possession as he has completed 87.3% of his passes building out of the back so far this season
Success has also come on an international level for Delgado. He regularly appears for the Mexico youth national teams, most recently appearing in the 2023 U-17 World Cup hosted in Indonesia last winter.
The Real Monarchs return to Zion’s Bank Stadium next Sunday at 8:00 p.m. after last night’s 2-0 loss to St. Louis CITY 2, facing off against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. The Monarchs look to get even with Vancouver after falling 5-3 to the Whitecaps earlier in the season.
