HOMEGROWN KIDS
Real Salt Lake 14-year-old Homegrown Axel Kei made his MLS NEXT Pro debut in Sunday’s match against Colorado Rapids 2, scoring his first professional goal. Kei is the youngest player to appear in the newly-formed league, surpassing fellow RSL Academy product Luis Rivera.
Sunday’s matchup with Colorado Rapids 2 featured the most RSL Homegrowns in a single match this season. Seven of the 15 players who appeared are currently signed to Homegrown contracts and 11 of 15 were current or former RSL Academy products. Homegrown Bode “Davis” Hidalgo recorded his first assist of the 2022 season while Jude Wellings, Gavin Beavers and Julio Benitez returned to the fold from international duty and injury.
THE UGANDAN CRANE
Defender Aziz Kayondo was recently called up by the Ugandan Men’s National Team for their Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches against Algeria and Niger. Kayondo started and played all 90 minutes in the Cranes’ 1-1 draw with Niger on June 6, while also being featured on the bench for Uganda’s 2-0 loss to Algeria. Kayondo will now return from international duty to the Monarchs for the Club’s upcoming match against San Jose Earthquakes II.
