Real Monarchs Head North of the Border

HERRIMAN, Utah (Friday, June 3, 2022)Real Monarchs (0-7-2, 2 points, 11th in West) travel to the Pacific Northwest to face Whitecaps FC 2 (4-2-3, 16 points, 4th in West) for the two clubs’ second meeting in MLS NEXT Pro. 

Sunday’s match, as well as all Real Monarchs matches this season, will be streamed live via www.MLSnextPro.com.

2022 Records: Real Monarchs (0-7-2, 2 points); Whitecaps FC 2 (4-2-3, 16 points)

Head-to-Head: Prior to joining MLS NEXT Pro, Real Monarchs and Whitecaps FC 2 each competed in the U.S. Division II setup, USL Championship. The two clubs consistently played in tight competitions with each match being decided by a margin of one goal, and the Monarchs posting a 1-2-2 (W-L-T) all-time record against the club from up north before WFC2 disbanded in 2017. The clubs’ last match was their first-ever meeting in the newly formed MLS NEXT Pro. The Monarchs and Whitecaps FC 2 played to a 2-2 draw behind two penalty goals from Monarchs Captain Pedro Fonseca. However, WFC2 earned an extra point by winning the shootout 3-1.

FORMIDABLE FOE

The first meeting between Real Monarchs and Whitecaps FC 2 this season was one of two draws that the Monarchs have earned on the season. Despite not earning an extra point in the shootout, the two sides were tied in shots with 10 and the Monarchs led the match in shots on goal with five. This match is the second of three meetings between the two sides and could be Real Monarchs’ best opportunity to earn its first three points in MLS NEXT Pro. 

SHOOTING CLINIC

Real Monarchs have out-shot its opponent in the past four matches and out-possessed its opponent in the past three. In each of those matches, the Monarchs have kept the opposition close, including an intense battle with league-leading Houston Dynamo 2. The Club will look to continue to keep the trend and hope to get results in the process. 

NATIONAL TEAM CALL UPS

Real Monarchs goalkeeper Gavin Beavers and defender Aziz Kayondo have been called up to play for their respective national teams. After appearing at a U-19 USMNT camp in April, Beavers is one of two keepers named to the U.S. U-19 roster. The Red, White, and Blue will face England and Norway in friendly matches held in Spain on June 6th and June 9th, respectively. Kayondo will be playing with the Ugandan senior national team in qualification matches for the African Cup of Nations. The defender last appeared for the senior team in both World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda in October. Uganda will face Algeria on June 4th and Niger on June 8th.
