SAN JOSE, California (Sunday, July 31, 2022) – Real Monarchs (2-13-2, 8 points) saw its three-game unbeaten streak snapped as the Club fell 3-1 on the road to San Jose Earthquakes II.
In its first match since the MLS NEXT Pro Invitational, Real Monarchs battled with San Jose Earthquakes II, trading possession back and forth early in the first half. In the 22nd minute, the Monarchs found their breakthrough goal when midfielder Tyrone Mondi was fouled inside the box by Ochoa, setting up a penalty kick for midfielder Pedro Fonseca. Fonseca buried the shot from the spot into the bottom-left corner to open the scoring for the away side. However, Earthquakes II were able to equalize in the 34th minute when midfielder Niko Tsakiris dribbled through the center of the box, splitting between a couple Monarchs defenders and firing a shot past goalkeeper Tomas Gomez and into the bottom-left corner to level the score heading into the halftime break.
Coming out of the halftime break, San Jose jumped out onto the front foot, scoring in the 55th minute with Rodolfo Castro squeezing a shot between multiple Monarchs defenders and inside the left post to take a 2-1 lead. Castro secured the brace in the 75th minute when he curled a free kick from just outside the box into the top right corner pushing the lead to 3-1. As the match came to a close, Real Monarchs looked to make a late-game push firing multiple shots at San Jose’s net. With numbers forward and Ochoa pulled off his line, Mondi chipped the ball to Kei whose volley was headed off the goal line by an Earthquakes II defender in the final minutes of the match, giving Earthquakes II the 3-1 victory.
