HERRIMAN, Utah (Saturday, August 22, 2020) – Real Monarchs fell 2-1 to New Mexico United in front of a socially distanced sellout crowd of 571 at Zions Bank Stadium on Saturday night, dropping a third consecutive match.
Forward Ryan Sierakowski scored his first goal for the Monarchs, but goals from midfielders Amando Moreno and Christopher Wehan on either side of the half were enough to give New Mexico United the full three points.
New Mexico United got things started early in the 5th minute with a right-footed goal from Moreno off of a free-kick sent into the box by midfielder Christopher Wehan. The Monarchs responded quickly in the 7th minute, but the turn-around shot by Sierakowski was saved by goalkeeper Cody Mizell. In the 30th minute of the match, Monarchs defender Noah Powder missed just wide on a free-kick shot from the top of the box, leaving New Mexico United to take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
New Mexico United started the second half the same way with another goal in the 48th minute. Wehan fired a shot off the half-volley from outside the box and into the bottom left corner of the net to double the lead. Several minutes later Monarchs midfielder Bode Davis recorded his first professional assist with a through ball into the box that found Sierakowski for a chip shot over the keeper and into the back of the net to cut the deficit in half. The Monarchs pushed for the equalizer late in the match to no avail as New Mexico United held on for the 2-1 victory.
