COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (Sunday, July 4, 2021) – Real Monarchs (2-6-4, 10 points) fell 3-1 to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Weidner Field on Sunday night. Aris Briggs scored his second goal of the season, but it was not enough to overcome three first-half goals from Switchbacks FC.
Colorado Springs jumped on top early with a goal by Deshane Beckford in the 16th minute followed by a goal from league-leader Hadji Barry in the 22nd. The Monarchs responded by cutting the lead in half with a Briggs’ goal in the 28th minute, but Switchbacks FC scored its third goal of the half just four minutes later on a header by Michael Edward.
The Monarchs pushed to get back into the game in the second half. In the 87th minute,Douglas Martínez was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty, but Noah Powder’s shot was saved and the match ended 3-1.

COS: Deshane Beckford (Michee Ngalina), 16th minute: From the right side of the field, midfielder Michee Ngalina fired a low-crossing ball into the center of the 18-yard box. Midfielder Deshane Beckford stuck his right foot out and redirected the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
COS: Hadji Barry (Deshane Beckford), 22nd minute:From the left side of the field, Deshane Beckford pushed a low-crossing ball into the center of the box. Forward Hadji Barry got past the defense, and buried the right-footed shot into the back of the net.
SLC: Aris Briggs (Douglas Martínez), 28th minute:Forward Douglas Martínez made a run down the right side of the pitch before sending a low cross to a wide-open Aris Briggs at the top of the box. Briggs then fired off a left-footed shot past the keeper and into the goal.
COS: Michael Edwards (Sebastian Anderson), 32nd minute:From the right corner spot, Sebastian Anderson sent a corner kick towards the near post. Defender Michael Edwards completed his near-post run and buried the headed shot across the face of the goal and into the left side of the net.
NOTES
- Monarchs forward Aris Briggs scored in the 28th minute of the match and now has two goals in two-consecutive starts this season.
- After lifting the trophy with the Real Salt Lake U15’s in the inaugural MLS Next Cup Final two days ago, goalkeeper Fernando Delgado was back on the bench for the Monarchs in the match.
