Real Monarchs Fall 1-0 to El Paso Locomotive

EL PASO, Texas (Wednesday, September 29, 2021) – Real Monarchs (4-17-5, 17 points) fell 1-0 to Mountain Division foe El Paso Locomotive at Southwest University Park, officially eliminating them from USL Championship playoff contention. 

El Paso jumped out on the front foot early in the match. In the 18th minute, midfielder Bryam Rebellon sent a cross into the box towards an unmarked Andrew Fox, but his header ricocheted off the crossbar to deny the home side the opener. Locomotive forward Leandro Carrijo fired a headed ball on frame in the 37th minute, but his shot was saved by Jimmy Slayton and the sides went into the break scoreless.

The Monarchs found its first clear-cut chance of the match in the 58th minute, but Haroun Conteh’s shot was pushed up and over the top for a corner. Locomotive FC were gifted the breakthrough goalin the 68th minute when Eder Borelli’s cross into the box deflected off of Ibrahim Bancé and into the back of the net to give El Paso the 1-0 lead. The Monarchs staged one final attack in the fourth minute of added time, but Leo Torres’ low cross into the box was cleared away by the Locomotive defense and the match ended 1-0 in favor of El Paso.

GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:

ELP: Ibrahim Bancé (Own Goal) 68th minute: Following a combination play by El Paso, Andrew Fox gathered the ball in the box before laying it off to Eder Borelli making a run on the left side. Borelli fired a low-crossing ball into the center of the box that took a wicked deflection off of Monarchs midfielder Ibrahim Bancé that redirected it into the back of the net for the own goal.

NOTES:

- Forward Malik Johnson missed tonight’s match due to suspension after receiving two yellow cards in Sunday's match against New York Red Bulls II.

- 17-year-old midfielder Leo Torres joined the Monarchs on loan from San Antonio FC this week and came on as a second-half substitute for Head Coach Jamison Olave in his first match with the Club.

- Missing the match due to injury were goalkeeper Gavin Beavers, midfielder Brayan Gomez and defender James Moberg.
