HERRIMAN, Utah (Wednesday, May 25, 2022) – Real Monarchs (0-7-2, 2 points) suffered a 1-0 loss to the league-leading Houston Dynamo 2 at Zions Bank Stadium.
The Monarchs began the match as the aggressors, seeing the majority of the opportunities. In the 7th minute, forward Yekeson Subah received a pass from defender Aziz Kayondo and pushed into the box to fire a shot which skipped just wide of the goal. Minutes later, midfielder Christian Nydegger rocketed a volley from the top of the 18-yard box, forcing a save from Dynamo 2 goalkeeper Logan Erb. The Monarchs’ best chance of the half came in the 26th minute when Subah vaulted into the air to connect on a corner kick from Chris Garcia, but his header bounced just over the crossbar. Despite half chances from both sides down the final stretch of the first half, neither side was able to break through and the two sides entered the halftime break tied at 0-0.
Dynamo 2 came out of halftime looking to take control, but the Monarchs’ defense held strong thanks to some timely saves from David Ochoa. It wasn’t until the 72nd minute that Houston broke the tie with a header from Michael off a corner. While seeking the equalizer the team went down to 10 men when Bobby Pierre received his second yellow card and was ejected.
Despite being a man down, the Monarchs almost found the equalizer in stoppage time when second-half substitute Jack Imperato slipped a short through pass to Kayondo whose shot slammed off the post and out for a Houston throw in. The match ended shortly thereafter in favor of Dynamo 2.
