EDINBURG, Texas (Saturday, October 2, 2021) – Real Monarchs (4-17-5, 17 points) fell 3-0 to Rio Grande Valley FC Toros on a rainy Saturday night at H-E-B Park.
The Toros created the first solid chance of the night in the 17th minute when Juan Azocar whipped a ball into the box towards a wide open Frank Lopez, but Lopez's ensuing shot on frame was saved by Jeff Dewsnup. In the 28th minute, Rio Grande Valley midfielder Jonas Fjellberg fired a shot on frame that was saved by Dewsnup, spilling into the box where Elvis Amoh quickly tapped the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs earned a free kick in the 37th minute that was taken quickly by Yekeson Subah towards an unmarked Charlie Wehan inside the box, but the ball took a high bounce on its way in and Wehan was unable to get a clean shot on frame. Defender Carter Manley doubled the Toros lead in the 42nd minute with a header from the center of the box that snuck inside the near post to give the home side the 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.
Rio Grande Valley FC almost scored again at the start of the second half in the 49th minute, but Amoh’s goal was disallowed for being offside. In the 76th minute, Fjellberg settled a pass at the top of the box with his chest, bouncing the ball up into the air and then before it came down, fired a right-footed volley into the top-left corner to extend the Toros lead and the match ended 3-0 in favor of the home side.

RGV: Elvis Amoh, 28th minute: Rio Grande Valley took a corner kick short to Jonas Fjellberg just outside the top-left corner of the box. Fjellberg whipped a ball on frame that was saved by the goalkeeper and then spilled inside the six-yard box. Elvis Amoh collected the spill at the near post and tapped the ball into the back of the net with his right foot.
RGV: Carter Manley (Jonas Fjellberg) 42nd minute: The Toros free kick from the right side of the pitch was played short to Andres Flores who then laid the ball off to Jonas Fjellberg down the right side of the box. Fjellberg then clipped the ball into the box towards Carter Manley and the defender’s headed attempt found its way past the goalkeeper and inside the near post.
RGV: Jonas Fjellberg (Rodrigo Lopez) 76th minute: Following a run down the right side of the pitch, Rodrigo Lopez chipped a ball towards an unmarked Jonas Fjellberg at the top of the box. Fjellberg collected the pass by settling the ball with his chest up into the air and then before the ball could come back down, he rocketed a right-footed volley into the top-left corner of the net.
NOTES:
- The result drops the Monarchs to 1-12-2 on the road this season, including 0-2-0 at H-E-B Park and 0-3-0 against Rio Grande Valley FC overall.
- Forward Yekeson Subah left the match due to injury in the 39th minute and was replaced by forward Aris Briggs, while defender Jaziel Orozco was replaced for injury by midfielder Ibrahim Bancé in the 84th minute.
- Missing the match due to injury were goalkeeper Gavin Beavers, midfielder Brayan Gomez and defender James Moberg.
