HERRIMAN, Utah (Friday, March 26, 2021) – The Real Monarchs today announced the preseason schedule that includes matches against Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Tuesday, April 6, followed by Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday, April 24 at Papa Murphy's Park in California.
As previously announced, Whitecaps FC will call Sandy, Utah, home indefinitely due to the travel restrictions currently in place between the U.S. and Canada because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the match against Whitecaps FC, the Monarchs will travel to Sacramento where they will face former Monarchs coaches Mark Briggs and Matt Glaeser for the second and final preseason contest of 2021. Briggs led the Monarchs to their first trophy in 2017, clinching the USL Championship Regular Season crown while Glaeser was part of the staff that earned the 2019 USL Championship Trophy in historic fashion.
The Real Monarchs began preseason on Monday, March 22, in preparation for the upcoming 2021 USL Championship season. Head Coach Jamison Olave sees an almost entirely new roster aside from Sam Brown, James Moberg and Jimmy Slayton.
New arrivals to Salt Lake City and the Monarchs are highlighted by New Zealand forward Max Mata, Chelsea FC academy product Josimar Quintero and Real Salt Lake Academy midfielder Julio Benitez.
The Monarchs will kick off the 2021 season in May and will face LA Galaxy II on May 14 in its home-opening contest, The full USL Championship is scheduled to be announced in the near future.
