HERRIMAN, Utah (Tuesday, March 9, 2021) - Real Monarchs Head Coach Jamison Olave announced today the hiring of Assistant Coach Joel DeLass, joining Elite Talent Director and Assistant Coach Cody Worden and Goalkeeper Coach Mirza Harambasic to round out the technical staff ahead of the upcoming 2021 United Soccer League Championship season.
“Joel is a great addition for the Monarchs staff because he already has the experience as a player and as a coach with Union Omaha, where they did really well last year,” Olave said. “He’s going to bring a lot of quality and experience into the staff and the club.”
DeLass joins the Monarchs from Union Omaha where he served as their assistant coach for the 2020 season, helping lead the team to a second place finish in USL League One. Prior to that, he spent a year with Lansing Ignite in the same position. At the collegiate level, he coached at his alma mater, Wheaton College, as an assistant coach from before moving into the head coaching role at Northwest Nazarene University for three seasons.
“I’m really excited to be here because it's obviously a very successful organization in the USL Championship,” DeLass said. “They’ve done a good job developing players through the USL Championship and into the first team. I’m really looking forward to being a part of the organization and very thankful for the opportunity.”
As a player DeLass appeared for the Charlotte Eagles in the USL Second Division in 2010 and the Dayton Dutch Lions in the USL Pro from 2011-2014. In 2012, he led Dayton to the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and earned USL Pro All-League Second Team honors. During college he played four years at Wheaton College where he was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Player of the Year as a junior.
